Hot Dogs & Summer

“Hot dogs and Red Vines and potato chips and French fries are my favourite foods.” Betty White

July is National Hot Dog Month

Summertime is at its zenith, with the heat of the afternoon sun mellowing to a gentle warmth as it heads towards its setting. This is the time for outdoor dinners and delicious conversations over summer feasts of hot dogs and potato chips.

There are many stories about how hot dogs came into being. My favourite is that they originated in Frankfurt. The “frankfurter” (aka pork sausage) has been around since the 13th century. On the imperial coronation of Maximillian II, frankfurters were given in celebration of this notable event. Even Vienna comes into the narrative, with the name “Wiener.” Vienna is known as “Wien” in the German language.

May your summertime dinners be filled with joy and good company.

Happy Hot Dog Month.

    1. Outdoor meals are especially memorable because they usually come with some kind of adventure: camping, hiking, sitting by a lake, seeing a sunset. Eating is an act of survival and being outdoors reminds us of our humanity. It is also a way to build community. I remember all those wonderful picnics with my grandparents.

  1. Love the history lesson here!
Okay, as a veggie, I tried veggie dogs. No. It’s a real Hot Dog, or not.
So, I am respectful of all the Hot Dog epicures, contestants in those eating contests and especially the bun, relish, mustard, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, fried onions, ketchup and pickles. OMG! I’m off to eat a condiment hot dog (sandwich)!!!!! How delicious is that? 😀 😀

    1. You bring up an excellent point – vegetarian meals. They are in demand and the chefs are responding with delicious hotdogs as well as burgers. If you look at the statistics, there is a steady rise in vegetarianism and a movement to more plant based foods. Health, climate change, animal welfare – society of taking a closer look at what we are consuming. We live is a time of many possibilities when it comes to food choices. I heading over to join you for lunch. Yum!!!

      1. Now you have me thinking… For lunch I’ll serve all of the condiment choices with a whole wheat hotdog bun stuffed with a chick pea thingy dog/burger that I make. Delicious! Looking forward to our lunch together!

    1. I agree – there is a special taste that comes from the “outdoors.” It’s almost primordial – a nod to the past, to outdoors adventures, to sitting around a fire telling stories as we roast marshmallows. And yes…yum!!
